You can use vlc player. This has nearly all the codecs you should ever need and will play dvd, avi, and also streams as well, and is for both linux and windows platforms. if you are using windows google "vlcplayer.exe" for the windows version

I have had the same problem my self. The last thing you want after you have downloaded the movie and extracted it from the rar file is to find that it wont play.

I have tried many movie players under windows but I was happy with only one. Nero may not be the best burning software any more but it's movie player is the best.
We will either find a way, or make one.

I have yet to find any file that VLC can't play, and with all the files that i've played with it, that says a lot. If i remember correctly, VLC will even play some cd images that contain music/video data.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...

I prefer Winamp.
You may have to DL a codec here or there..but it doesn't eat up your resources and it's pretty nice in my opinion.

(I haven't had to in a while, though..)

Hmm..the only prob. is that I don't think I've been able to play DVDs with it. Maybe I'm missing a codec..

Later, and Peace.
