Itz,
It was pointed out that you need to overwrite the file space, formatting just gets rid of the file directory. Overwriting the file space with 1's and 0's, as many times as you specify.

As I have said all the alternative of watching movies are not as good are torrenting is so it is worth the risk as I see it. They can stick me in jail for all I care but I am going to fight every step of the way and I am not the sort of person you want to mess with. :D

i used to be a rebel without a cause. But the MAN broke me.

I have read this entire thread. Pretty interesting ideas.
Final note... be realistic. No one cares about you downloading movies. If they do, then you are a one unlucky son of a bitch. shit happens i wont argue that.

If you got some sensitive material i think USB is the wya to go.

But in my opinion, if you already have the feds banging on your door - game over buddy. There is no way out, they will make you life hell even if you are innocent.

So morale of the story. Its alright to cheat if you dont get caught. I apply that to any other activities that are considered illegal by the society.
Feel free to disagree.

I would suggest some sort of auto delete config that runs as soon as its plugged into win or linux... You can leave out mac because I don't know any police department that use's macs... Just have it corrupt all data once a certain folder is accessed.. There scan will go through all folders and if its in there it will corrupt there equipment to... Then you can always claim idiocy and say you did not know it was there... With the hole drive corrupted they have no evidence as to where the bug came from.

Ok so I have read through the topic now and come to the following solution (so far)...

Prevent Detection

Peer-Guardian was mentioned a few times, and seems to be a pretty good idea, but people hunting file sharers may use other IP's, so some sort of proxy might have to be used. Problem is that it would have to be very fast proxies.

Private file sharing networks which only allows original releases of files, thus making it harder to track, and also allows encryption.

Examples of file sharing networks like this is "DC++", which is a direct connect client, where you connect to a hub (server) and then download from the users there. These hubs are often private and very safe, and me myself use it.

Also an "original release" is a program, movie or anything that is released in "the scene" (google if you don't know what it is), and can often be identified with a group name in the filename and that the file in question is cut down in many small rar files.

Hiding of data

Well, the best idea that I could get out of the info here, is that one would use truecrypt. And there is an option in truecrypt that lets you create one encrypted disc, and then "hide" one inside of it, making it almost impossible to find. As in, you have "family photos" for example, in the visible disc which is of no interest, and then all the pirated stuff in the hidden one.

Destruction of data

Seeing that not many of use are bomb experts and should NOT try to make bombs (since it would probably fail and have us killed over a few programs and porn movies) I suggest that simply overwriting the data many times would be the best choice.

Now, I store all my filesharing stuff on a seperate HDD, and then of course all the installed stuff on the system one (in seperate folders). So my idea would be to have a special media (CD or USB stick) with a program that was configed already, that on connection to the computer, would automatically restart the computer, and do the following:

1: It would not show that it is deleting files, that wouldn't be very discrete now would it? It would show something else, a screensaver of some sort or telling the watcher that it's burning a very important CD (family photos that can't be replaced?)

2: It would format both of the discs, and then overwrite all of the space with random data 7 times, then format them both again.

3: It would place some random data of your choice on the second HDD (family photos? =) )

4: It would install a new preconfigured Operating system (windows prefferable. Showing that you have some sort of skill by installing Linux might look bad somehow)....

Anyway, this is what I can make of it at the moment, add more info or correct me if I'm wrong (Just woke up so might have missed something).

microwave format

Post by DNR »

well wiping and formatting a large disk would take too long, and if you stop the wipe - say by unplugging the box - data might be left recoverable.

I still want to try this - get a small portable microwave, some are about the size of a small toaster. Install an external HD and mount it inside the small microwave. If the police pull up in the drive way you can just hit "cook" and ten minutes...

I guess what is needed is someone to actually try this
I know the circuitry will be destroyed, but I wonder what the effect would be on the platters inside the HD..

Well I have heard that there are companies that can recover data from HDD's that have been through fires and stuff =/

True but fire is one thing... The microwaves may do a thing or two to the platters.... Seeing as fire is just heat and a micro wave is send out radio waves that have been known to magnatize objects... Personaly I would love to know if this would work... I just don't have the money to test it out.

Yeah i am pretty sure putting it in the microwave will work, have you ever seen what happens when you put metal in the microwave? BOOOOOMMMMM!!

just make sure as soon as you hit the start button on the microwave you run as fast as you can out of the house

Why hide data? If they knock police officers knock on your door with a search warrant, just axe the shit out of your PC...
