Problem with Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun?

My brother has recently installed Tiberian sun but has encountered an odd error...whenever je start the game, the background music and sound plays, but the screen is totally black! There is no error message, no crashing to windows....the screen is just totally black.

My video card is a Radeon X300 Series.

I dont know if its any use, but he encountered this same problem (EXACTLY the same) with Red Alert 2.

what OS is it? XP or Vista? 32 or 64 bit?
