donation block and MySQL manual added

Post by bad_brain »

as some of you have already seen that I have added a "donation" block, donors are displayed on an extra page (I will most likely make the page a little better when I have more time)....of course donating is not a must, the site will never become commercial.
donations are used for the main server rent and especially for renting wargame boxes, so this year we will have more wargames than before... :D

while looking for a donation plugin for the site (at the end I had to create an own one, the available ones are simply too buggy) I stumbled over a MySQL manual...and because we already have a PHP manual on the site I thought it would fit really good.... :)

Thats the same idea I had when I posted some stickys on basic computer torubleshooting - even though it is posted somewhere else, it don't mean its not handy to have right here. I consider suck-o to be an informational portal and we should have all the info here, copied, rather than just a link (which can go dead!)

The donor page - its funny with the syringe - perhaps you meant a bag of blood i.e. blood donor. If you want to make a funny one - use the suck-o mascot - show him lifting his shirt up and missing a kidney!

Im pretty excited to have that mysql manual at my fingertips. Extremely handy! way to go B_B

but hey out of curiosity and because i may actually need to use this info soon here, how do you get a donation block like that on to the forums? was it anything special or just some simple stuff like paypal?

I don't think anyone would care if you put a couple ads up.

ads are evil, and it's a principle that Suck-o has stood for, for a long time.

it's the usual Paypal code, only had to be converted to a phpnuke block, which means $content .= in front of every line and escaping all special characters like " with a backslash....

f4Gg0t_43, I simply see it from my own POV, if I go to a site and see ads I am already slightly annoyed, if I would place an ad it must be for a product I REALLY like personally...and Debian sadly is not paying for ads...

When I walk down the street, I like to see trees, clean park benches, natural shapes. When someone puts up a billboard, or paints a park bench a garish color, they are interupting my calm walk through life. When did it become ok to be obnoxious and stick a sign in front of a natural wetland? Its rude, its like the owner figured you did not want to see anything else but a loud sign reeking with biased commercialism. What next? Your cellphone will start txting you because its GPS noticed you were walking near a store! I know! Lets advertise our brand by putting the letters on the seatpants of a 10 yr old girl! - wait, they already do that

Its a matter of personal space - if I want to find something to eat, drink, or buy - I will stop at a information kiosk. It is a matter of respect - you don't bother people unless they are interested.

So thanks for respecting my personal space BB!

suck-o is my favorite place to be and im really glad to see that there are no adds up. That would make it look more like the average site that was put up to make money. but looking at suck-o you can tell this place is different :P in a good way of course

Well, as said already, there's many damn advertising everywhere, it's like there's no place to hide from it, every place, every technology, every thing we like, everything we don't like, everything is advertise abused

is insane and pretty annoying so to find one place where you can relax without it is just great :)

it is not that suck-o can't be supported (economically speaking) for which the donation block i think is enough and a better way to do it than ads

and as for the mysql manual, good thing as well, it's always good have a near by reference to look at ;)
