I have a IBM ThinkPad T22. When I press the power button, it will come on, and then it shows it loading Windows 2000 and displays the bar across the bottom. But then it shuts down and goes to a black screen.
I have tried connecting a monitor to it, same result. I have it connected to the power supply at all times.
Its an older computer (hence the W2k), so I am not all that worried about it. I can get a new one pretty cheap. Just that it is an aggravation that I can not use it
Laptop won't start

can you boot a Linux live distro from CD?
if you don't have one simply get a small distro like Puppy Linux:
http://www.puppylinux.org/
it's just 100MB...
let us know if it works, then we will see if it's just a problem with Windows2000 (or maybe the HDD) or if it must be something else....

If you can load a live cd as b_b said then the hardware is ok apart from testing the hard drive. I have a IBM T20and it runs xp without any problems. It maybe a problem with 2000 being corrupt. Have you been using this pc with win 2000 installed or was it like this when you acquired the laptop?. If this was like this when you got it why not try to install another OS and then tell us more from there unless you are already using win2000 which in that case you might want to keep using it and repair it as best as possilble.

hit F8 (or f10 depending) and select a step by step boot mode - where you can select what to load. I had a IBM thinkpad - and the same thing happened - the modem card was bad and it caused a critical error - and the shut down.
BTW IBM was really cool, I called them, and they shipped me a padded box! I shipped it back to them, and in two weeks got it back - fixed - no charge, the lappy was about four years old?
Call 'em and see.

It came with W2K, but I changed it to XP. It worked for quite awhile like that, then one day, nothing. I have tried booting from a CD and from a floppy, but it still shuts down. I put a new battery in it about a year ago, so I don't think that is the problem, plus I keep it plugged in when I try to start it.
I tried a Linux disk, but as soon as it starts loading, it shuts down.
I think I will remove the wireless card and the CD rom and see what happens. If all else fails, I guess I can try a new drive it to see if that works. I do have a USB DVD+/-RW that I could try and boot up from just to eliminate the hdrive and on board CD

hm, what Linux distro you tried? I highly recommend to use Puppy Linux, because it loads 100% in RAM (if you have enough, but I guess the lappy has at least 512mb)...this way you can exclude the HDD from being the problem (if you boot puppy linux from an USB stick you could also exclude the CD drive).
if it still fails to boot it could be the RAM, the mainboard or the CPU..also maybe the PSU, but I doubt that. can you enter the BIOS?

Try to go into BIOS. IF you can get into the BIOS then most likely the computer is running fine. This would indicate that the operating system has become defective. Make sure that you have a good scratch free install disk!
If you cant get into BIOS try removing all the parts that you can and reboot. Then install parts one at a time rebooting until you find the defective part.
You might be overheating make sure fans are running
Check the power supply!! Make sure its the correct one and connects tightly. Often this is the first thing that is destroyed on a laptop (Input jack ).
P.s. & off topic Gogetta - you get that laptop working?

UPDATE.
I re-installed W2K. It will boot up, but I have to select boot device. When that screen comes up, the screen says !HARD DRIVE. The hd is the only one with a ! in front of it.
I will go ahead and boot all the way up, but then after a minute or two, it shuts down and all I have is a black screen
Does the ! mean there is a problem with the hd? I re-formatted before I installed the W2k and it formatted fine.

BIOs either cannot remember or find a valid boot device - meaning not on the HDD or CD disk.I re-installed W2K. It will boot up, but I have to select boot device.
HDD is either missing, not communicating, or unable to read the HDD.When that screen comes up, the screen says !HARD DRIVE. The hd is the only one with a ! in front of it.
It can't finish booting up, OS is probably missing or corrupt.I will go ahead and boot all the way up, but then after a minute or two, it shuts down and all I have is a black screen
Try booting to the Windows disk. Let me know if you can boot up to the disk.
Several things to consider:
dead CMOS battery
HDD knocked loose, bad or wrong file format
