University test servers
I was handing in some work today to a Professor at the University. I often stay to chat with him, so in the middle of everything I came to think about an idea I had that I wanted to present to him. The idea is about a new kind of virus (not actually a virus, but I haven't come up with a new kind of category for it yet. The idea will be presented in detail later, if anyone is interested).
Anyway, so he told me that, if I wanted, I could get access to one of their labs that they use to do experiments on these kind of applications. You know, like how malware spreads among a certain amount of machines.
It's a rather interesting system, where you can book 1-32 machines during a set amount of time, choose what OS you want on them, and then when your time starts, they will be ready for you (not virtual machines), and you can start your experiments in an isolated environment.
He showed me the server room where the computers are located, and I asked if I could take some pictures to show you guys.
Not very good pictures, but I have very bad camera in my phone, and the room was small so. Anyway, here they are.

"The best place to hide a tree, is in a forest"
those are u2 rackmounts
The cabling piled on the bottom of the rack is likely killing the cross flow air, and causing those racks to overheat.
that last picture, did you know that unsecured box is worth $3k USD?

shit like that should be bolted down. I know the server room likely is locked, but nothing should be easily picked up and walked away with.
Looks like fun cats!
I agree you need to change your software idea from 'virus' - perhaps call it a "active, polymorphic network repair tool" get a catchy nic like "Cat's NiP" or something clever!

True DNR, and actually it wasn't that long ago (about 1-2 weeks or so) that someone sneaked into 4 different lecture rooms and literally ripped down 4 projectors from the ceiling. I heard they caught the people responsible, but they didn't want to say if it was students who did it (which most likely means it was?)
haha yeah, a good name is the key to a successful project (not)!
But when I have done some more work with the idea, I will come up with a simple category name for it. The name for the application itself will be a Greek God, not very original maybe, but it works well and is rather catchy

Great opportunity!!! I have to admit, I'm a little jealous :/ as I'm still setting up a home security lab with a few ITX boxes and a lappy or 2...
Glad you are getting the chance, keep us up to date, I'd love to hear about the progression =)

Actually I have presented a similar (almost identical) idea before in another thread

It's "Idea 2"
This time I am planning it in a bit more detail.
So the cat was out of the bag a long time ago
