Router issues

Post by toast »

Hi guys!
So I'm having issues with my router. Ive changed the ssid name, encryption password, ntu, channel the transport speed from 10 to 100 to auto mbps.
Ive called the router tech ppl, and I dunno what they are reading off.
OH- I have 2 laptops wirelessly connecting, the router drops the connection ever hour or so, having me to unplug it and sometimes that doesn't work. Ive also upgraded the firmware. I have fiber optic connections too. So I know its not da internets. If I connect my laptops to wires to the router, the connection doesnt drop.
So insight on what the hell is causing this bull?

You could try using static IP's, other than that i would say get another router. It may be faulty. Have you tested with a different router.

Not long ago we had issues with our network dropping packets at the office. This was down to a faulty router. We replaced it with a new one which was also faulty. All i can say about routers is some last longer than others and just like many products, some will always be found to have a fault so i do definitely recommend even trying someone else's to test to see if that is the problem before spending your hard earned money [-X

Perhaps your DHCP lease time is set to 1 hour... I dunno, what kind of router is it?

Its a d link or something like that.
And it doesnt look as if the lease time is for an hour.... B/c also if I hard wire the connection, I have no issues. But I dont want wires all over my apartment.

ah dlink, hard to say in that case because they have had this problem for literally years. Most often it can be fixed with a firmware update... but some of the new routers don't accept the firmware leaving you in the same position.

for arguments sake though, are you using windows by chance?

If so, from cmd run ipconfig /all and look at the lease length.

There is a chance that the problem is solely a DHCP issue, in which case without the ability to change the lease length perhaps hard coding your network address would solve the issue..

Yea, the firmware didnt help the issue either...

And the lease time isnt really long. It expires in 3 hours.
But it still drops and reconnects real quick.
So I dunno, I got my bf working on it, but he is having trouble.

perhaps instead of updating the firware on it see if you can run a custom firmware? a lot of times the custom ones give you a lot more options than what normally comes with your router

Update- Yup, I did put custom firmware on it this time, and it seems to be doing pretty good. Although there is still an obvious difference between my laptop and my bf's. My linux compy loads better and faster and stays connected longer than the windows 7 computer. I think windows 7 is also a factor. Any who, I'm getting a linksys router soon, so I'm chucking the dlink.
