New here. I have a question.

Post by Dobie »

I know this is ignorant as hell, but we got a instant message from a friend of ours. Or what we thought was our friend on her computer.

In her message, she said her computer was failing and she needed help from us, she asked us to send her a file on our computer so that hers could be updated etc.

Well we fell for it and sent her that file she requested. Well a couple days later, someone took over our hotmail account from the info we provided. We talked to our friend and of course it wasn't her.

Now my question is. Since we didn't save email we sent and don't remember what file it was...

What file on my computer would save my password for our hotmail account? I am really curious.

Thanks.

do you use the remember me box in the login screen?
do you auto-login with your IM?
Cookies maybe

one MAIN thing to do is scan your computer with up to date AV scanner and Anti-spyware

if you dont have eather, well just do it any ways

Symantic has an online Virus & Threat Scanner

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/defa ... &venid=sym

You'll have to use Internet Explorer, sorry, but it is a good scanner
unless someone has another one thats good

What i think is..
when you sent them that file they used Netstat to get your IP address and found a way into your system
common problem, its happened to me before too
when you send a file through IM you have a Direct Connection with the other person and they can get your IP that way.

A solution to this is to use a file hosting service online,
upload your file that you want to send
then give them the link the the file
Avoid the whole Direct Connect altogether

Hope this helps

I think I'm getting too suspicious with new thread... I always have a little voice saying: "Watch out, he just want to get pass on a box"

I hope the voice is wrong.

Cool, thanks for the help. I have used the remember me to save my password etc. I was worried that someone can get on my computer and just get my password really easy and wanted to delete the file if I could.

Thanks for advice.

Guys, the admins (at least i do) check the threads every day, if we see something against the rules, we'll surely take the proper action, so no need to worry.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...
