What is a Linux router?
What are it's advantages?

For example:

Most home routers run on Linux as far as I know.
Apart from being very powerful, it's easy to setup and can be scaled down to become very very leight weight as well.

Better featureset, not limited to features the stock firmware has. Things suchas signal strength, more security options, speed options etc.

There's certainly better options than an old Linksyswrt54gl. For instance a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 comes stock with DD-WRT (another open source firmware). And if you don't like DD-WRT you can put OpenWRT on it instead.

there's also DebWrt, which is Debian for routers:

Linux simply makes sense for routers because the TCP/IP stack is part of the kernel, on Windows it's just kinda (badly) attached to the core....that's why Linux can deal much better with packet manipulation of any kind.
