Dual boot

Post by Stavros »

Well, I finally decided that I want Linux. I'm not replacing Windows.

Basically, I have a 60 GB IDE Hard drive and I want to put Linux on it. I want to run the two HDDs independently (kinda like having two computers; one linux and one windows, except that both HDDs will be in the same computer). Have I lost anyone yet? Hope not.

I have Knoppix (v4.0.2, not the newest v5.0.1). I'm going to be considering flavors of Linux, so suggestions for a Linux newbie are welcome. I alos have DSL (Damn Small Linux) Thanks, Bad_Brain.

So, suggestions please.

If both of your drives are IDE you need to set them up as a Master and a Slave partition. Or just connect them on two differant IDE cables. You need to
have a version of linux that will intall on the hardrive. Not a live cd. I think Knoppix is a live cd?

You need to make sure that your boot loader(Loads the OS) is configured to give you a choice between Linux and Windows.

Also if you want you can run VMware.... but that is more for experimenting.

Oh yes, for got about that. My main HDD is a 250 GB SATA HDD.

The other one is an old (like 3 years old) HDD we were going to RAID with my dads crappy Dell, but this was before I knew how to RAID.

Knoppix is a Live CD, but can be installed to the Hard Drive, but in a another thread about dual booting someone said Knoppix can be a pain in the ass for a Linux newbie.

As of now the 60 GB HD is un partitioned and has never been used. Where can I find this boot loader? does it come with all linux distros?

Yeah a boot loader almost always comes with an install. There are occasions
where is is kept on an external device though. But that is for security/backup
purposes.

Well I know that suse installs a boot loader that will configure a dual boot. You might want to try that. Get used to the OS before you try harder versions. You don't want to overwhelm yourself.

Well, I took the Linux Distribution Selector test and I've come up with Ubuntu as my solution.

Thanks to z3mwaz and p99 for your help.
