Here's something common for me (happened this afternoon):
Compiling latest GIMP.
Can't, need GLib.
Compile GLib, can't b/c I need pkg-config.
Compile pkg-config.
Compile GLib, can't b/c pkg-config not installed (my computer lies).
Go through every directory in pkg-config, untar everything yadda yadda yadda.
Compile GLib, can't b/c pkg-config not installed:)
