Your choices will vary - some are just card readers that read a bar code or mag stripe.
Some cards are proximity, they don't have to swipe the card thru a reader, but hold it up to it - these will not get dirty and stop working like a dirty card reader will.
you'll want a system that you can administer the cards yourself - by using a card programmer to reset or create cards by PC/laptop.
Installing these are very important, to bypass card readers, people will attack the main controller box - which needs to be hidden and secure from the outside/doorway.
Not all card readers can attach to a network to provide data on who is in the building, who last entered, exit etc.
So - you'll need to do some shopping - how much does the account want to spend on this entry system?
Lastly - man trap.
Depending on what level security you need in the building, you can create a man trap, which is just a anteroom with the card reader. The man trap has two purposes - 1. only one person with the card can enter the anteroom - so no one can slip in along with them. 2. if the card is rejected or some one tries to tamper with the reader, the outer door locks them in. Security will have to reopen the anteroom. The card reader is only one tool, usually video or patrol is used along with a card reader - to ensure that only the card holder enters the building or to tape what they might leave the building with in their hands. Patrol adds the risk of being caught.
