apparently they give you a few search terms about the crash so that you can look up what happened on the interwebs when your machine comes back up... which to me seems very much like they are turning their help desk responsibilities over to Google

It does kind of look that way doesn't it.
In the back of my head I am kind of wondering what code problem, lawsuit or in this case google help desk problem will create windows 9.
I find it funny I have been following such problems sense win 95 and it never seems to end but nevertheless it is interesting.
I can understand why people hate the BSOD, remember when computers first came out, there was no google. It was not the blue screen that pissed people off, but the cryptic error code that was hard to look up. Again, you did not have google back in the old days of computer repair. I remember I built a book of error codes - by experience. After I got an error code, you had to call on the phone (not email, IM, or google) for tech support - it was then - those tech guys would clue us in on what some codes meant. So it meant that back in the day - people considered us Wizards because we had these black books of error codes no one else had. Now, some 8 year old can think he is a genius because he can find such a black book online with google.
The early unix had its own crash, and caused 'kernal panic' - because of the same reason - you had to work hard to find what the error code meant. books, BBS forums, calls to tech support.
Now, linux was lucky - he not only developed his OS during a more internet friendly time - it was easy to post questions and search for answers to problems - unlike early days of Win and nix. So I feel things went smoother - complaints were posted and answered in a timely manner, people collaborated on the projects - unlike microsoft propriety codes and secrets. So, I feel people wrongly agree that linux is the best OS - only because its errors were more user friendly, and easy to research.
Win 8, the weak assed emoticon (thats so 1990's) sucks - but displaying links or terms to search is better - once you get your computer fixed so you can google them!
