I am thinking about upgrading my desktop. I need to know how do I choose the perfect SMPS for it?
How do I know how many volts I require?
What if I choose low or high volt power supply?
Any guide on selecting proper SMPS for the desktop?
How will I come to know what SMPS I need?

How many peripheral do you want to run off it is a big consideration. Typically I just go with as large as I can afford.
The voltage and things are kept in standards unless you want to run something else than a power supply for a desktop?

one thing I additionally expect from a good PSU is a modular cable management.
but yeah, give us some hardware specs (CPU and g-card, other devices you will use), else it's hard to give a good recommendation.

Alrite, I'm gonna buy following configuration in coming months. I'm saving money for that.
Its Intel i5 2500 or i5 760 processor.
2 HDDs. Will add 1 more if possible.
No GPU as of now. But will go 4 nvidia gt 430.
ASUS P8B75-M Motherboard.
Sound card.
2 Optical drives.
@floodhound2, if u choose very large power supply, will it not impact on the motherboard or processor? I mean the high voltage?

Re: Howto choose perfect SMPS for the desktop?
No, voltage on a PS are set to a standard so they all come with the correct voltages on each pin. check here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_supp ... (computer)
The current on the other hand will vary but that is typically good. A larger wattage power supply will have the same voltage (as per standards) but offer more current if the motherboard needs it.
So for the gear you mentioned I would say that a 350 - 500 watt power supply would be adequate.
Just make sure the PS has all the proper connectors that are needed or else you'll have to buy adapters. An example is a SATA connector vs. Molex connector. They will both work but depending on the hard drive a converter connector would be needed.

Re: Howto choose perfect SMPS for the desktop?
Moreover; if you use a 1000 Watt PS on a system that only needs 200 Watts then this is okay. The PS will just not work as hard to deliver the power.
Don't worry about over doing the PS. A bigger one is better (bigger in terms of watts), just don't select one that is under powered or you could damage it before its "calculated time to live."
- hope all this helps.
