There are plugins / extensions for web browsers to download video material regardless of the OS.
For example I use this extension: http://www.chromeextensions.org/utiliti ... ownloader/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; on both Windows XP and Debian.

Youtube downloader wouldn't have anything to do with the machine or OS, it's all about the browser.

I use Flashgot for Firefox
