YAY! been looking forward a lot to the newest one of the Dead Space series, because 1 and 2 were a LOT of fun already. I have played about 5 hours now, so it's time for a little review.
--- story/setting ---
the whole Dead Space series is about alien artefacts called "markers", those huge artefacts have an immense power which might be used as infinite energy source, but sadly they also turn every life form into necromorphs...kinda like extreme bizarre form shifting zombies.
you are playing the role of Isaac Clarke, like in part 2 where he got alien information implanted into his brain and in the end destroyed all markers...he got a little psycho over that though.
scientists created artificial markers now, but some sect weirdos blow up the shields of those and yes: necromorph action worldwide! fun!
so you are re-activated from the loonie bin...of course the girl you once loved is also in danger deep in space. the usual stuff.
--- the gameplay ---
first of all: the game is in 3rd person perspective. usually something I TOTALLY hate, but the fact I still love Dead Space shows what a great series it is. the weapons are pretty odd, you can build them yourself from parts you find and also upgrade them, same for your suit. a new thing in part 3 is a little robot you find later in the game, it looks like a RC car...you can drop it and it gathers material by itself and drops it at the work bench for you, really nifty idea.
besides the weapons you also have different abilities provided by the suit, you can freeze enemies for a limited time and you can pick up and throw items in a telekinetic way...good to save ammo. which brings me to the next point: ammo. geez...it is damn rare, so don't be too trigger happy. also the usual "headshot is the best!" strategy does not really work, for many opponents it's the best to shoot them in the knees and then stomp on their heads when they can only crawl around anymore. sounds bloody? it is. it REALLY is.
besides the fragging, stomping and splattering there are also small riddles ("how do I use that control unit?"), reaction tests (hacking door controls) and some fun zero gravity elements where you fly around in space (by suit or in a spaceship).
--- system specs ---
the graphics are really good, but the game should still be playable on older systems because it's not that much of an explosions-everywhere-overkill like Black Ops 2 for example....also the setting itself (dirty space station and not all shiny with mirror effects) should be g-card friendly.
--- conclusion ---
if you are into shooters, horror and space: get it! NOW!
Dead Space always been different from the usual games of that genre, may it be the weapons or the opponents, maybe that's also why it's the only 3rd person shooter I ever really liked. for the full experience it would be of course the best to have played the first 2 parts too...but it's not really necessary, the whole story is explained at the start of the game. but beware, Dead Space never been easy games, and also the 3rd part has a learning curve because you really need all the abilities, and also the ammo is very limited as mentioned.
