i cropped a photo and saved it to the original and closed the program. Can I recover the missing pieces?

hm, yeah, will be hard....but not completely impossible. what you could do is to run photorec and recover all images, with a little luck the one you overwrote can be found there too:

also the problem is when you OVERWRITE the file with the new cropped version - now the computer has done worst than delete - it has replaced the original file with the edited version.

IF you always rename or relocate your cropped images - you can prevent losing the original. Set your image editor to "Save To.." a different folder than where the original images are kept.
