Geo Tagged Photos

Post by lilrofl »

This is a news clip on how geo tagged photos from a smart phone are being used to... get this... figure out where the pictures were taken.

Code: Select all

http://kyeos.wordpress.com/2013/05/10/warning-if-you-take-photos-with-your-cell-phone/
solution: Turn off geo tagging for your photos

iPhone (4.0):

1. Go to Settings.
2. Select General.
3. Select Location Services.
4. Locate Camera from the list of apps that use Location Services and change the setting to OFF.

Android (2.2; 2.3):

1. Open the Camera app.
2. Select the Location icon.
3. Select Off.

Some versions of Android will need you to open the Camera app, select the Menu button on their phone, select Settings and disable Geo-tag photos.

BlackBerry (6.0):

1. Open Camera.
2. Select the Location icon and set it to Disabled.

Previous versions will need to open Camera, press the Menu button and select Options. Then set Geotagging to Disabled.

wow, such a feature should be disabled by default on a phone....it can be useful in some cases (but that's more in the "professional photography" sector I think, and I guess nobody there uses a phone to take pics anyway). for the standard phone users it's nothing but data grabbing, FB for example definitely makes good use of it.

I am using a nifty little tool called PhotoME since a couple of years already to view the meta data of pics (which also contain GPS info if available) and I also use it to create "100% legit" fake pics by adjusting the date a pic was taken (for example).

good to check what info the pics you take with your phone REALLY contain and to edit the data to cause some confusion... 8)
