alrighty, I will just give a quick info for now because I am still in the middle of server setup and site transfers.
sooo....I was working on the server yesterday when suddenly things got VERY slow and the system had a huge CPU load, even with the webserver disabled and basically nothing running. I noticed that there was a good amount (about 25-40%) the system wasted with i/o-waits (waiting for the HDD), so I checked the RAID and one HDD was kicked out of it and was in the process of resyncing. that can happen, but what was REALLY bad was the resync rate: 75kb/s, which is ridiculous (just imagine how long it would have taken for a 2 TB drive).
I rebooted, same behavior and hardware errors in syslog. so yeah, all points to a HDD failure, the odd thing is that the system is still very slow even after I marked the HDD as faulty and removed it from RAID, so most likely both are not good anymore.
end of story: new server ordered (8 cores, SSD RAID, 24 GB RAM instead of 6 cores, 16 GB RAM and normal HDDs), and now transferring all over...which is a pain in the ass because I can not .tar.gz everything (writes are painfully slow), so I have to transfer file by file via sftp from server to server.
