Windows update causing boot loop

Post by JohnB »

Windows installed a bunch of updates but configuring them failed. The exact message is:
"Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"

It stays with this message for about 30 minutes before restarting. Then it comes back to the reverting changes message again.

Things I've tried:
  • Letting it revert changes - it goes on forever
  • Unplugging network cable, it seems like these updates have gone too far to be stopped by this
  • Deleting the update cache in c:\windows\Software distribution\Downloads
    and \Datastore
  • Getting into safe mode to disable windows update on startup. Unfortunately, windows update starts before I can fully enter safe mode.
  • System restore. After putting in my Win 7 disc or choosing "repair computer" during start up I get this:
"To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore.

Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore."
I can still access cmd prompt if that helps.

hm, try this:
- go to \windows\system32\config
- create a backup folder, copy everything from the current directory into it
- go into the RegBack folder
- copy everything 1 directory upwards (copy *.* ..)
- reboot
if it does NOT work move the files from the backup folder 1 directory level up again...
