Boot time
So yeah this is my first time using linux. But will it always take so long to boot or is that just a first time thing.

It always will...
until you fine tune your boot process... check your init.

right, the time it needs to boot depends on how many services have to be started. every file which is located in the init.d directory stands for the service and is started automaticly, so disable the service you don't need.
you can do it usually in a desktop menu (where depends on the distro and desktop) or you can simply move the files out of the init.d directory (be cautious and move only the ones you're really sure about, and don't delete them).
