I am staying at this new house we gonna move in and i had my laptop with me so i figured ill see what networks are there around me. There is bunch of networks of my neighbours but they are all protected, the only one that worked and that i am using right now is called linksys.
Is that just a name of a network? I definitely see that name everytime i look for networks in a new location, so i figured it is smth else.
Google just told me that its a type of a router so i am a bit confused...

Well Linksys Is The Out Of The Box Name Given To All Linksys Routers. It Sounds Like When Someone Setup Their Wireless Network They Never Did One Of The Most Important Things "Change The Router's Name" If They Haven't Done That Then They Have Opened Themselves To A World Of Problems. Be Careful Around That Network isapiens. What Makes Me Worried Is That If You Could Just Hop On Means They Haven't Enabled Even WEP Which Is Short For (Wireless Encryption Protocol) Or Turned Of SSID Broadcasting. It Sounds Like They Used A Simple To Break Network Key Or Even NONE AT ALL This Means All Data Sent To And From
That Router Could Be Intercepted Very Easily And Logged. Be Careful When Connecting To Unknown Networks They Could Be Contaminated With Spyware Or Viruses Or Worse! I Hope You Have Tight Security On Your Laptop.

nice links Chaos...
hmm...well, my first thought was it's the echo of your own network card, when scanning with Netstumbler it often picked up my own card too...but you said you can connect through it to the internet, so it have to be something else. Linksys is manufacturing pretty any kind of network hardware, from a simple PCI network card to WLAN solutions for huge areas. is any kind of big company in your neighbourhood? if yes it might use WLAN....
