Noisy machine!

Post by Swan »

My computer is making a really annoying and loud buzzing/humming sound from the fan. Is there any way to remedy this?

Either

A) You need a new fan because it's the fan's motor making the noise

or

B) You can get a vibration dampener if it's the fan rattling against the case.

how can I determine which one it is?

The machine will run for several hours without a problem. hell, even overnight, so maybe 10 hours, but then the alwful buzzing starts. Sometimes, aswitching the machine on and off helps, but it is pretty inconsistent.

Sounds like the bearing in the fan might be going out; if it is from the fan in the power supply be cautious. I had the same thing happen to me where my fan was making a horrid sound and then late that night I seen a puff of smoke come out of my power supply. Needed to get a new on.

A case fan is like 2 dollars US. Or go to second hand stores and pick them up cheaper.

A processor fan is a bit more costly but a 478 socket runs around 7 dollars

Good luck

Well, here's what I did.

I tilted my computer case. When my computer case is laying on its side the vibration from my back fan stops. When it's stitting upright, it vibrates slightly.

Since you said it was loud, I'd be looking into a new fan.

Fans can range from a few US dollars to about 20 US Dollars. Depending on what you want (I'm assuming you just need a new fan and aren't looking for some fancy super-silent fan, then you'd be looking at a low-end fan.
