SuSe Configuration?

Post by ebrizzlez »

Well.. I have a little trouble over here. I just installed SuSe 10 Linux on my other harddrive and i found some trouble on it. When installing it, it detected my cards and drives but didnt configure them. When i signed onto SuSe 10 for the first time I was all excited, to find out later that none of my drives where configured. When trying to play a game for Linux it gave me an error message saying "3d Graphics Card Unavailable" or somthing like that. Then when trying to listen to music, there was no audio output either. Then i tried to connect to the net and got nothing. I went on the YaST control and added a network card and just click next , then tried to acess the net again. Once again, nothing. I took my Cd that came with my wireless network card, and popped it into my computer. But i found out it just had a .exe startup file so it was made for Windows. I would really like to know how would i configure all my drives? And also, how would i configure my wireless network card? btw. i have a TRENDnet wireless card, i really dont know if its supported by SuSe or if there is a certain way to configure it. I have a distro , so its version 10 rather then 10.2..... Also, is there any other good Linux OS that supports easy Wireless Networking and easy configuration settings?
Thanks, really apperciate it.

hm, give me some more details of the graphics- and wireless card, so I can check for Linux support and make a distro recommendation...
best run these commands:

Code: Select all

lspci

Code: Select all

ifconfig
and post the output you got...

what file type was the music you wanted to listen to? mp3? if yes it's possible you need to get a codec first because many distros don't include it due to copyright- and/or "open source only" reasons.

well, the wireless card is not supported, at least it's not listed on the manufacturer's site http://www.trendnet.com/support/linux.htm :?

have you picked the right driver for the graphics card in the configuration? best check again in Yast: http://searchsystemschannel.techtarget. ... 79,00.html

well, best post the output you get by ifconfig, so I can see if the wireless card is maybe just configured wrong, it might be the driver is included in SuSe (I'm not very familiar with SuSe, I use Debian)....but well, the best option is still to use a regular network card on Linux

alright, is there an onboard network card? because it found a network device, it's just not properly configured....

and the graphics card should work fine, maybe you simply have to get a proper diver, look here for details: http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-ins ... HOWTO.html

hey , thanks. i will look into it. really apperciate it. and i have no idea what an onbored network card is. i have an extra card in the back that has an IEEE slot, so maybe its picking up that. i really have no idea, i am guessing my wireless card is not Linux supported, and my extra port slot (for gaming) has a IEEE input slot too, so i have no idea. Do you know any good wireless network cards for linux, or any other good Linux OS?

As long as the hardware is detected and suse SAYS it works and is running, then uninstall and reinstall the proper files in yast2 online updater.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...

onboard means a network "card" which is embedded into the mainboard, in this case there should be a RJ45 socket at the back...if there is one Linux might have picked this one up. so if there is a socket best disable the onboard network device via BIOS and run ifconfig again, if you still see the output below Linux has recognized the wireless card and there is only some configuration needed (let me know then and I'll tell you how to do it):

Code: Select all

eth0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:04:5A:7E:35:AD

inet6 addr: fe80::204:5aff:fe7e:35ad/64 Scope:Link

UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
but if there is no such output anymore you have bad luck and Linux don't recognize the wireless card.
if you really want to buy a new wireless card for Linux check here:
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tou ... ivers.html
but well, I recommend to use a regular (cable-connected) one, simply because they usually work without any problems...

oops...I shouldn't answer posts before having enough caffeine in my blood...

the wireless card IS recognized, but there also is another NIC:
02:05.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88w8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless (rev 03)
02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Linksys NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (rev 11)
so the question is if the one which is labeled as eth0 is the wireless one or not...so do like I said above, disable the other NIC and post the ifconfig output again...

i am new to the whole Linux thing but I can tell you this.... I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING. when you told me to disable the NIC , i right alway went to YaST and tried to disable and delete all my network card configurtion.
Well.. when you told me to disable the NIC I had no idea what I was doing so I just deleted all the configuration of the Wireless Network cards. Then it didnt allow me to delete two configurations set it just unconfigure them....
the Marvell 88w8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless and the Linksys NC100 Network Everwhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 configs... and when I went to try to configure them The Linksys brong a Window Warning saying YaST doesnt have a built in moduel for this but it can be built in the kernel... Now I dont know much of Linux's Kernel for I have just started Linux, but I do know that is a highly senstive bootup file in Windows... So I was a little scared, but when i deleted the configuration i retried ifconfig and got this...

linux:~ # ifconfig
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:186 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:186 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:13716 (13.3 Kb) TX bytes:13716 (13.3 Kb)

Tell me if i did anything completely and utterly wrong here.

don't worry, no real problem....the NIC is just down now, we only don't know if it was the wireless one or the other..
alright, we best setup BOTH cards now and simple check if there will be any connectivity. I assume your wireless access point (router) has the IP 192.168.0.1 (if it is different simply replace the it with the actual one in the following commands, also edit the IPs in the ifconfig-commands then so the first 3 numbers are the same as the access point one):

now we setup the first card:

Code: Select all

ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
and to set the gateway

Code: Select all

route add default gw 192.168.0.1 eth0
and the 2nd card:

Code: Select all

ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Code: Select all

route add default gw 192.168.0.1 eth1
alright, now both cards are configured, now simply ping the access point:

Code: Select all

ping 192.168.0.1
and see if you get a reply or if the pings time out.

sorry it took me so long to reply, i have been quite busy. but anyways... I did as you said, and the first set of commands went up smoothly.. but the second set wasnt working. when i used ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 up it gave me some sort of error saying eth1 or somthing, so i just changed eth1 to eth0 then it setted up the card. then i tried to ping the host, and it said host is unavailable! i tried to connect to the net to see if it was a false negative , but i couldnt!

hm, looks like the wlan card isn't even recognized.....only the "normal" NIC is... :? imo the best option is to connect it the "old school" way with the router: by cable. it would be the easiest and most reliable option.....the other option would be to get a new wireless card which is supported by your system or to look for a distro which supports your actual one (no guarantee there is one)... :?
