Putty help...

For beginners, flames not allowed...(just by the staff :P)

I just downloaded and installed puty and attemptede connecting to a server and It prompts me for a password and username. I have no idea what password and username its talking about. I never created one so I don't know. I'm sorry if its a noob question but i need help. Thanks

You're connecting to a server that requires a user name and a password.

check the "free shells" thread here on the newbies-board, or if you have a spare old computer install Linux on it... :)

yep!! get yourself a free shell, when you register you will get a user name and password, then you may login to your shell..

I know how to do it now. Now i have a nother question.lol!!!!
How do i check my mail and send mail through my shell account or putty?
I made my shell account from arbornet if that helps.

could not open connection is the error I get. Any Ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

hm, well, if you used the proper syntax like:

telnet host 25

an it don't want to connect do a MX DNS lookup of the IP, maybe simply the hostname is different. if the hostname is right and it don't work it might be the host simply don't offer SMTP services.... :-k

better yet does anyone know a site or tutorial that teaches putty from the ground up. At least the basics because I'm totally lost.
