I was just trying to use John the Ripper for a random hash password that i generated. I was reading some tutorial and all it said was:
1. put the hash in a txt file
2. put the txt file in the run subfolder
3 run the thing - this is what i type in cmd [ john-386 password.txt]
4. i get an error saying: "No password hashes loaded."
Am i missing something crucial in my steps?

yes, windows system.
I put the ripper straight up in C so it would be easier. Then i put the password.txt file in the run subfolder.
What would be the direct command that i should type?
Or maybe i just created the hash wrong... Is there a special way of doing it cuz i just put some random thing that was generated on a website. [md5 generator or smth like that]
