Kismet error

Post by isapiens »

After getting some missing libraries i managed to install kismet.

But when i try to run it i get the following message:

Code: Select all

isapiens@isapiens:/usr/local/bin$ kismet
Server options: none
Client options: none
Starting server...
Waiting for server to start before starting UI...
FATAL: Could not find user 'your_user_here' for dropping priviledges. Make sure you have a valid user set for 'suiduser' in your config file. See the 'Installation & Security' and 'Configuration' sections of the README file for more information.
I googled the error, lots of stuff came up, didnt really understand anything so i thought maybe you guys could help. I just want to know whether its caused by a wrong cocnfig file or an incapatable wireless card. I am loged as root thought.

cheers.

Where it says "could not find user 'your_user_here' for" I think that means you need to configure the file for kismet where it says "your_user_here" and put the username your running the program from.

thanks for the replies. I realized though i tackled this stuff too early. i am too noob in Linux, i will take my time to get the basics down before i start screwing around with networking.

you have to do this before it will run.

* Edit the config file (standardly in "/usr/local/etc/kismet.conf")

* Set the user Kismet will drop privileges to by changing the "suiduser"
configuration option.

also you have to set the capture source.
Don't forget the "READ ME".
