Screwed up my debian wireless

Hey guys, i was messing around with nmap, aircrack and airmon (i think)...
and i did smth to screw up my wireless.
Is there a way to just go back like in windows restore?
Cuz i really have no idea what i did or how to fix it.

THe way i made my wireless work was to put 4 downloaded file into /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware. They are still there... but i dont see my wireless card recognized.

is it a PCI card? if yes, is it listed when running the lspci command?

I guess thats my wireless at the bottom.... so it does detect it. I gota make it work somehow.

I will reinstall those 4 files i was talking about, i am on ethernet right now so i can do that. [edit: that didnt help]

it used to recognize the wireless. Before this happened i was screwing around with the monitor mode of/on with airodump-ng.... Dont know what happened. Works fine in windows so i didnt break it, which is probably not possible. Got to activate it back somehow maybe?

You guys should have seen the effort i was making today.

I was building modules, installing firmware, checking kernel configurations... (has no idea what he did)

But then after a reboot the kernel 'encountered an error' and refused to load. It was a good run boyz, bloody well done!!!

ok... should i just reinstall linux or is there a way to restore the kernel to its defaults?

well, you can simply install a new kernel, but the problem is most likely not in the kernel itself and so the external bad config that is causing this problem will still be loaded afterwards.
so I recommend a new install, makes more sense than searching for an error that we will most likely not find anyway. and well, it's a good practice....at the beginning I sometimes had to re-install Linux twice a day...
are you satisfied with the distro you use so far? if not I can recommend Debian Lenny, my favorite desktop distro at the moment....

Are they really that different? ("etch" and "lenny"). I think i will stick to "etch" because i figured it is not in the "testing" stage like lenny, so it might be more stable and i will probably find more tutorials on it then on lenny.

PS: glad to know that screwing up your linux happens to other people then me

the difference between Etch (stable release) and Lenny (testing release) are the package versions. Lenny is pretty stable (at least I had no problems yet), and the network install worked like a charm for me, and that's why I recommend it. but I have to admit I haven't worked much with Etch yet...I simply had the feeling to work with something "risky" now that I am pretty advanced in Linux already....it's kinda fun to see how a distribution evolves.

so if you are used to Etch keep using it...
