Any expert ethical hackers or crackers here?

Post by thebrantmeister »

I am doing a field research project at school on hacking. I need interviews from ethical hackers and destructive hackers (I guess that would be crackers). If you are not an actual cracker or destructive/illegal hacker, but you are still an expert in that field, I could use your help.

I will probably present you with 20 questions or less if you are interested. If you want to be labeled as "anonymous" that is fine. Any and all help is appreciated.

And I almost forgot to mention... I am not quite an "insider" on the subject, right now I have an "outside" stance. I am completely unfamiliar with coding any sort of penetration tester and I'm not an expert at securing my own network and/or websites.

well, if the interview is not containing "for educational purposes" questions like "how to hack a website" you can count me in... 8)

It's not going to be any kind of questions that put you in a position to explain how to perform an illegal task. They're going to be more about why ethical hackers and crackers do what they do, how much time and work they dedicate to their hobby/profession and different opinions about the usefulness of ethical hacking and cracking.

But as an example, if you could hack my home network WITHOUT HARMING ANY OF MY MACHINES that would be cool to include. I could make a little video about it or add to my paper to show just how advanced some hackers/crackers are. But afterwards, I would have to learn how to protect against it.

If you could tell me a few fixes to certain common vulnerabilities that would be cool. You don't have to tell me how to exploit them, just how to fix them.

well, why not... but I am not really into MS systems, I am a Linux guy specialized in server issues.
best would be when you post specific questions that I can answer, because the ones you asked are a little too general and so answering is kinda hard...

Here are a few questions to start things off; and these go out to everyone who's willing to respond:

What do you consider your field to be (ethical or unethical)?

What impact do you think your field has on society?

How long have you spent learning your trade? Do you think in that time you have become advanced?

Would you consider yourself to be an expert, or a master of the trade?

Who are the great "hackers" in your opinion (ethical or unethical)?

Give me some in-depth information about your hacking specialization (cracking, penetration testing). Explain what your job/hobby might consist of.
-A good answer would be "I find vulnerabilities in the Windows
and patch them to make the operating system more secure from
crackers and intruders". You don't have to actually explain how to
exploit any vulnerabilities.

What jobs have you done that you are most proud of?

Thank you for your time:).

What do you consider your field to be (ethical or unethical)?
Ethical

What impact do you think your field has on society?
Absolutely none

How long have you spent learning your trade? Do you think in that time you have become advanced?
I have spent about a year and a half. In this short amount of time I do not consider my self to have become advanced.

Would you consider yourself to be an expert, or a master of the trade?
I do not!

Who are the great "hackers" in your opinion (ethical or unethical)?
Kevin Mitnick, Ankit Fadia, Steven Levy,...

My hobby is to secure my network and computer. I also look on the internet for easy exploits and vulnerable services or devices.

What jobs have you done that you are most proud of?
I am very proud of the time I found a google dork that allowed me to view all the login information of all the FTP servers that had youtube videos embeded on there websites. I could have defaced some thing close to a 100 websites but I did not want to look like some script kiddie so I posted the google dork on many websites.
We will either find a way, or make one.

20 questions

Post by DNR »

Hi all, 8)

What do you consider your field to be (ethical or unethical)?
>I think hacking is inherently unethical, you have to break rules to find out how things work, or could be made to fail. How can I know how to protect my house if I don't try to jimmy my front doorlock with a credit card? If you want to defeat criminals, you have to study how they act. What is playing with lock picking tools to break a padlock or using software to crack a program?

What impact do you think your field has on society?
>Ethical hackers can make the internet safer and find new tools for connectivity. In general I think most hackers try to avoid being picked up on radar, so who cares what society thinks.

How long have you spent learning your trade? Do you think in that time you have become advanced?
> Since the Commodore 64, 1979?....

Would you consider yourself to be an expert, or a master of the trade?
>I consider myself elite in my area of study.

Who are the great "hackers" in your opinion (ethical or unethical)?

>several people already listed a few favorites already, but also consider people like Frank W. Abagnale jr. and Albert Einstein of course.

Give me some in-depth information about your hacking specialization (cracking, penetration testing). Explain what your job/hobby might consist of.

>I am college educated in Computer Science, but my unusual personality and obsessive-compulsion to 'break' things makes me a very good security specialist. It is hard to call it a 'hobby' when you do something that is more like a disorder- to be disorganized, but very methodical, having a neurotic compulsion to commit illegal activities, as in the case of computer/network intrusion and copyright violations. I love Microsoft, I even have stock, and why not Bill Gate is one of us, likeable or not. So I hack windoze products. Since I am certified in Novell, I can hack it too.
My 'hobby' branches off into wifi as I am a mobile user

What jobs have you done that you are most proud of?

>The good jobs you never talk about. The bad ones, well..
Back in the day of college, I enjoyed installing a packetsniffer on each of my college's network. I did a mission impossible to break into the sysadmin's closet to steal and burn a copy of their blackbox network security devices - that allowed me to install sniffers, and crackers on various computers around the campus. Of course everything was done for my own learning experience.
Do you consider boring shit like setting up 26 Netware 4.x/5.0 servers and 48 clients for each semester. I also built the computer crime lab at another college when I was taking law enforcement there...
