well, I wanted to cut 460 seconds from a mpeg, because the file size was too big for a DVD, but I made a mistake and instead of cutting the 460 seconds I cutted the whole movie into 460 pieces. and ALL files were stored on the desktop...
now the funny part: of course not all files had place to be displayed with an icon, but there was no error message or anything! all files really had been placed there, and when I erased the ones which were displayed by an icon the other ones remained invisible and were only accessable in the folder-view....hmmm...could be useful...

thats pretty interesting, but what of arrange icons, if you wanted to put a certain file to be hidden amongst the desktop it would most likely have to start with Z, have the oldest or newest date, have either the highsest or lower file size, or be a most unsual type (or just a type different than the (hmm, lets name this technique...lets see...mass-iconing) rest.) but you say that its still shows the files in my computer or a file browser...but we must remember that mass-iconing isnt really inconspicuous. I wonder if there would be a way to tap into the exit space of the destop where the invisible file would lay and place a file there without mass-iconing? Obviously the OS knows how to handle teh situation when there are to many icons to place visibly on the desktop, so there should be a routine or some sort of call you could make in an app to trick the handler of that situation there are too many .

well, my sugestion is to take the easy way. try running a search on your computer and hitting the "hidden files" buttons. that is if you know the names of your files.

you might be looking at a relocation problem. your computer may have just moved them to a different place in order to save all of them succesfully, therefore, a search would find them too.

let me know if it doesnt work and ill think of something else.

well, the question is how it´s handled by the system, if you could manipulate this process it would be possible to place hidden files anywhere!
in my opinion it would be normal when the "invisible" files stored in the background would appear once there´s enough space on the desktop again, but they didn´t...for me that´s a bug.
I´ll do a reg-snapshot, place a file on the desktop and check then what changed in the registry....maybe I´ll get some useful info.
