I would say C++ ^^

Since it's a very "near machine" language and it has a lot of possibilities. Also i find it easy to learn =]

Well yeah it's multiplatform of course, but it has to be built in different ways to work on the different Operating systems, different libraries and such. I am not that good yet to provide you with much information about how it would work, but i do know it's a little different on different systems =)

I use "Visual C++" on Windows, and gcc on Linux although i haven't started to program on Linux yet ^^, also it was a while ago since i did anything on Windows either due to a break i am having atm ^^

Yeah Java is multiplatform, i don't know much details about the language though since i haven't read it ^^

If you learn C++ there are no limits to your good or badware :roll:

yeah, C++ is a good choice!
I can also recommend Perl, its focal point is different from C++...while the C++ focus is on stand-alone applications the Perl one is networking and web applications. Perl is rooted in C and Unix commands, so it is also very interesting to learn.. :)

Don't forget PHP!!!

PHP is also like perl, a networking and web-based programming language. You've seen some of the stuff i've made, such as a spreadsheet program and an IRC bot, etc. I'd say review your options and make a decision that fits you best.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It works on my machine...
