Build me a Falcon!

Post by Lyecdevf »

The new Falcon NotrhWest Mach V has much to be desired except for the price tag which is about $7000 if not more. I am posting this in this section because I am wondering whether it would be possible to build such a system & overclock the processor at a much lower price.

Image

CPU: 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800 (overclocked to 3.63GHz) 2.93GHz
Motherboard:chipset Intel BadAxe II 975X Nvidia NForce 680i SLI
Memory: 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics : (2) 1GB ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT (2) 768GB Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra
Hard drive: 150GB, 10,000 rpm hard drive, 750GB 7,200 rpm hard drive 150GB, 10,000 rpm hard drive, 750GB 7,200 rpm hard drive
Optical drives: 20x dual layer DVD burner, 16X DVD-ROM 20x dual layer DVD burner, 16X DVD-ROM

Above are the specs of this computer. If I went out and bought the same components and overclocked the processor do you think that I would have a computer that would be as good the one I would buy from the store. Of course it would not be hand painted but how much do you reckon this would cost me?[/i][/b]
We will either find a way, or make one.

I built that 2 years ago or more for 600 dollers its now scrap blew the mother board at my old apartment lmao dam expensive scrap

You could easily do it for under $1500USD.

to be honest I see no reason to overclock modern CPUs, the little gain of speed is not worth the shortened hardware lifetime (or the loud cooling).
but ok, if you really want to there is no need for expensive Intel CPUs, get a AMD 6000+ Black Edition, the "Black Edition" ones (a 5000+ one has been released some days ago too) are made for overclocking and have extra features for that.
that already saves a LOT of money and the system will not be slower as the Intel one (even faster in some cases as benchmarks have shown).
also no need for 20x burners, almost no 20x media available (and it's expensive compared to 16x ones) and the couple of seconds you save compared to a 16x one is not worth the extra money.
750 GB HDDs? meh...get 500GB ones and save 50%...the performance of the 750GB ones sucks anyway compared to the 500GB ones (at least in the tests I've seen)...they are simply too new yet.
should be no problem to built a highend-system that way which can compete with the Falcon one for just 50% of the price....high quality Lian Li case included.....and it'll be even more silent...

I agree with every one that has posted so far.

You can easily build one for far less and more than likely far better that tat one.

B_B is right also over clocking is no longer needed today unless you have a reeeeeeeaaaaaaallll good reason to destroy your gear.

yea thats what I was saying in my post waht bb and flood said I have never been a overclocker its a waste and ruins a good pc plus if your not carefull will toast the pc in no time its also the most expensive way to build you need more fancy heat sinks etc that cost a crapload more

That sounds like a good idea and maybe a good water cooling system so it wont be to noisy. I am going to look into this and see how much it would cost me to build that. :D

Since everyone else has said the right things, I'm just going to parrot them.

For the setup you have mentioned I have almost the exact same computer setup planned for around $1600. Granted it won't be SLI or CrossFire, but seriously save your self several thousand dollars and built it yourself.

Yes, you will have a computer just as good as that one (and none of the overpricing!) with money to spare for games or porn or whatever your heart desires.

B_B's right, overclocking just isn't worth it.

Actually Big-E with just one 8800GTX it's going to put the price around 1500 (unless you don't buy the best overclocker mobo and maybe skimp on the RAM).

My advice is to either wait for the new Yorkfield quad-core Penryn's to come out 1st quarter next year and all the Core 2 Duo's will plummet in price. Or get a 45nm processor (it uses less energy AND runs cooler!). Although if you're going for gaming I'd suggest Dual Core since Tom's Hardware did a Quad-to-Duo comparison and Duo is better for games, but Quad is better for encoding and rendering.

Not to question toms hardware but Quad cores are going to prove that next gen gaming really needs multiple cores to provide some serious AI, physics, and processing power.

recent games are ok to do with dual core but the upcoming games like UT 3 and above work better with quadcores because the cores are seperated to do tasks. ( also a physics card does work nicely with it :P )

Well I checked the web and realized that the new Athlon 6400+ x2 Black edition is coming out. It is a 90nm CPU core, 2MB l2 cache, 3,2 GHz processor and is to be sold at $240. The +6000 is priced at $178. So if I was to get the =6000 and overclock it to 3,8GHz it should be faster than Falcon! :D

why after our advice do you still want to screw around with overclocking its stupid and why go with the newist piece of junk its a waste!!! you can go older save a ton and still be fast and if you go intell your even faster AMD costs more to go faster intell like I said I had a tweeked celeron dual for 600with board and all but whatever do what you want and waste what you want and watercooling is a pain and at times leaks and there gos your whole investment plus water and others is hundreds of dollers not at all cheap or cost effective and you must use silver past or the chip will be toast on over clocking the super silver crap that costs like 5 dollers to 10 dollers a tube I have it on my amd so it runs cool at normal clock speed man wish I had that kind of money to throw around!!!!
