How to change Layer2 to layer3

:( Dear all,
i have a cisco switch 3550, i know by default it is layer2 how can i enable layer3 option on it, i mean i then i will be able to make routing table and single interface IP assigine, my next qestion is how can i change it back from layer3 to layer2...................
