Cheap. It's a midrange rig. Definitely not going to play current generation games (CoD4, Crysis, etc) on Ultra High.

AMD is ok if you're skimping for money, if you're looking for raw power intel's Core2Duo's they released last month are worth looking at.

Hard drive: at least 250GB and definitely a DVD +/-RW (look for SATA DVD drives).

Best bang-for-buck graphics card on the market is either the 8800GT or 8800GTS (G92) however these cards are (in terms of US dollars) ~$150 more than the 8500.

It all depends on what you're using it for. If you're looking at rendering, I'd strongly suggest taking a look at the 8800GT.

Edit: I always think in terms of gaming. I know this probably isn't what you're using it for.

I build my computer under 500 euros. I used an old CD-ROM and flopy drive. I put it all together and started the machine installed linux on it and every thing worked nice. I still remember that day as it was yesterday. Every thing worked so smothly that I just could not believe it!

Well of course if you buy a 375 euros graphics card than the the price is going to be much higher. I just bought one costing some thing around 50 euros because I do not plan to play any computer games on it but I can change it any way any time.

I planed to build my computer to be cheap but with the infrastructure that would enable me to upgrade the system with out a problem. You chose to build a gaming computer if I understand and you are asking if the price is good?!

I got to try a lot of computers as I brought them for customers and built rackmounts for another company. I just like AMD chipsets over intel, and its just a geekish intuition - I can't really put it in to words. Over 25 yrs, my fave has been an AMD box.
