I had the same issue, download the alternate cd by checking the box under the Start Download.

Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer.

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Under the "Start download" button, there is a checkbox where it says

"Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer."

Check it, then download. It will download the version that Nerdz mentioned

Not to be daft like but how are you burning them?
Sometimes when we download an .iso image we may burn them wrong.
They won't show errors because there are no errors in that format.
One time I burned an .ISO and spent ages trying to figure out why I was getting that same error you are. I think I burned it on a DVD or did something else wacky before I realized what it was. I checked it for errors too..LOL.
But after I caught my error I burned it right and it everything was fine.

As far as freezing, maybe disabling ACPI.
I helped someone a few weeks ago and once they did that in the bios it worked perfect.

You can actually do it from the install menu -noacpi should suffice. I had that problem on my laptop, it would freeze directly after the splash screen when booting - I think you hit f5 or f8 or something like that to get to boot options from the live cd.
