ultimate linux + nvidia mx 440 prob
Well this kinda feels like envy fucks it up ;/
So you will either have to go into failsafe mode and invoke Xorg -configure and reconfigure your xorg.conf. And then install the nvidia drivers manually.
Or reinstall the whole OS and then do the drivers.
Btw are you sure that it's an Nvidia card that you have?

enter lspci to list the cards, then you'll see if it's really a nvidia one.
when you re-configure the xserver pick "vesa" as driver, the desktop should appear then...in a crappy resolution, but that's good enough to install the nvidia driver like shown here:

thanks for all your help.
yes, it is a nivida card. just a very old one ^_^
i uninstalled envy and took off my nvidia driver, then, with the card still in with no driver, booted up my pc and with a very distorted, head-ache indusing screen i googled a fresh copy of envy, read the FAQ, did a complete system update before installing envy, everything went smooth and now i am on ubuntu with perfect 1440x900 resolution =) oh and i did all this just before i came here to give a update.
