I have a laptop running windows 2000 and installed a usb wireless adapter.
My problem is that I cant get windows to connect to the internet with internet explorer. I can "Ping" in a console window to yahoo.com etc, so I know the adapter is connected to the network.
How can I configure windows to connect using the USB adapter, or do I need to use a newer version of internet explorer?
1. problem is that the laptop has no networking except a phone modem so updates are a bit of a problem at the moment.
2. This is not my laptop so I am not going to use Firefox Linux etc.
Windows 2000 problem expert advise needed...

You do not need a new version of IE, although I have IE7.
In the IE browser window:
did you check your setting in TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>[tab] connections?
I am sure your problem will be fixed here as you said you can ping yahoo.com
you want XP if you want to upgrade from win2k leave that nux shit alone! Only friends would stop a friend from going nux.

Yes I tried (TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>[tab] connections) this it does not list the usb adapter due to the old age of the operating system. It does list an IR device, but that is not gonna fix this problem.DNR wrote:You do not need a new version of IE, although I have IE7.

I cant change operating systems because it is not my laptop it is a customers and they like 2000.
I am thinking that I need to somehow assign a new protocol. All the connection types i have are for the phone modem.
- This is a tough one.
P.S. Fellas I googled this for days before I dared ask in here

Nope I am using my basic internet connection with no encryption. I actually thought of this, but did not matter. We all think alikebad_brain wrote:oh, are you using an encrypted connection? I've read very old browser can't handle it...if yes try it with an unencrypted connection, just to make sure..
upgrade version
that might be the weakest link on the system right now, at least upgrade the browser VERSION before proceeding.
off to work now..

Did you check what protocols you have installed?
Network Connections > Wireless Connection > Properties > Then Some random tab in there (dont have windows installed right now, but it shouldn't be too hard to find..it`s there someone, it lists all the protocols installed)
List those here, like you said..something might be missing.
