problem fixed, thank you all ( especially bad brain)

it was the motherboard unfortunately...
i didn't attempt the other solutions given, in other words my first attempt was to change the motherboard..... i had a spare motherboard, so i put it in and it worked...

I suppose I should get a new motherboard as well, but they are rather hard to find around here :S The nearby computer stores don't seem to save any old stuff.
