scandisk is done by the OS if you had a crash or bad shutdown. It takes so long because you have a large harddrive. Scandisk runs at boot up because it rather scan your disk before other processes load. Uner is right, if you cancel it, it will schedule it for the next reboot.
Check and see if there is anything in your msdos.sys file, you want to delete the line that says 'autoscan='
You can run Defrag, it usually performs a scandisk on the drive (of sorts) before it defrags. You might have corrupted data, bad sectors, or even a virus.

The install disk you are using - its it real Microsoft or 'downloaded'.
Does the scandisk complete or does it fail?
Have you done defrag? You need to ensure two things - you have a good Windows XP disk, and a working harddrive.
use Run... type "edit" , open file msdos.sys. On my computer this file is empty.

looked in the startup entries already?
start->run->msconfig
startup tab->look for "chkdsk" entry, if existing uncheck it->reboot
after reboot check "don't show message again (sth like that)"->"Ok"
if there is no such startup entry it points to a hardware problem, replace the SATA cable and check in BIOS if you can enable SMART for the HDD and then check the status when booting.
but I am pretty sure it's the first option...

folks, he has a bogus XP install disk - he just said he downloaded it.
So that adds variables to the equation. Its not that the dowloaded version could be corrupted or infected, but when you connect the machine to the internet, M$ malware police could be connecting to the box to 'update' it.
You need an official XP install disk.

Going to 'msconfig' will take you to a menu with tabs, General, System.ini, Win.ini, Boot.ini, Services, and startup.
You can re-check these tabs to make sure you do not have any diagnostic start up, or chkdsk or dsrepair selected.
