Dual Layer DVD wont play

Post by ayu »

So, I have a Dual Layer DVD burner. And yesterday a friend at uni lent me a very good comedy DVD that she wanted me to watch today. But when I insert it, it wont play =/

It gets mounted and I can see the DVD folders on the disc, but if I try to run it with VLC, nothing happens, and if I try with Totem, I get "Could not read from resource". Also copying the files doesn't work either, since I get "input/output error".

I haven't googled this, nor have I tried another player. I just wanted to see if anyone had a good working solution, or has been through this before =)

If I find a solution before anyone answers, I will post it here

hmmm...having the libdvdcss library installed? most likely the DVD is protected, and because of patent violation problems the needed library to play such disks is not included in Ubuntu (also isn't in Debian).

you can get it here:
http://packages.medibuntu.org/hardy/libdvdcss2.html
simply install it locally via dpkg -i

hope it helps...
