How do i disable Stretched Desktop on vista?!?!?

Post by qwertyqwe »

I have a problem that comes up every time I try to play Oblivion: this ATI popup comes up saying that "Stretched Desktop is currently enabled. Before you can enable an extended desktop on this display, you need to disable Stretched Desktop"

The thing is, this warning actually closes, not just minimizes the game. I used to have this warning come up after I closed some games, but thought nothing of it. My Oblivion game also worked fine for a long, long time, but now this is suddenly happening.

There are absolutely no solutions that I can find online, and apparently everyone that has tried to contact ATI gets a reply saying they cant help... Some people have the problem that they can play COD4 singleplayer, but when they try playing multiplayer, the game closes with this message (which I find very weird)

Is there any way i can get rid of this problem on vista? If anyone could help I would be very grateful. If it helps, ive got an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600, on a Toshiba Satellite A210 (though other people have had this problem on other ATI Vista systems as well.)

hey thanks for replying.

if you are referring to this thread
http://www.suck-o.com/modules.php?name= ... =0&thold=0
then the suggestions there haven't solved my problem. I don't think you can actually do what bad_brain suggests on a Vista system (namely Click View > Advanced View > Stretched Desktop), I think that's only on XP and earlier.
If that isn't the thread you were referring to, please give a link

Thanks

oops, you did give a link . Buuut, the link doesnt work, a page comes up saying "Secure Connection Failed". Are you sure that's the right link? if it is ill just click on the link saying add an exception.

Oh sorry, I use SSL on Suck-o, all you have to do is change https in the URL to http, or simply add an exception and use SSL as well ^^

yup, all updated.

I've found two forum threads in polish and romanian that seem to discuss the same problem (the romanian thread does so halfway down). If anyone speaks polish/romanian and would have the time to see if they managed to resolve the issue, you will have my eternal thanks.

I have a few suggestions on how you might be able to solve it.

*Turn off the notifications in Security Center

*Turn off Security Center

or

*Uninstall ATI Catalyst and just keep the drivers for the card

Might work ^^

thanks for your reply :). Anyway, I've now tried turning off security center notifications, and that didn't solve it. To be honest, I'm a little reluctant to turn off security center completely, so I want to uninstall ATI catalyst first. What does ATI catalyst actually do (and what will I miss when I uninstall it)?

catalyst is ATI's own control center where you can control certain settings of your graphics card that are not shown in the windows control center.
it add's a few more options then windows, but overall is not neccesary for your system to run.
