I'm atm also looking into proxie servers and learning about it, i've found a usefull proxie list http://www.publicproxyservers.com/.

Proxies are pretty simple things really. They let you mask your IP by telling the browser to surf the web through the target IP/Server.

A word of advice, for a proxy to work correctly, you have to disable java and javascript as it would still allow other to detect your real IP address. Also, target your browser to a proxy in your own country.
(I once set my http proxy to target a spanish one...google showed up in Spanish :p)
There's no installing them really. I only know how to use them with firefox.
Here's how:
Click on the Tools menu goto options and click connection settings. It's pretty obvious from there.

To disable Java and Javascript:
Tools>Options>Web Features..unclick the 'Enable Java' and 'Enable Javascript'

Some useful proxy list sites are http://www.cybersyndrome.net,which has a few hundred updated hourly. http://atomintersoft.com, which has fewer proxies on display, but most have a good uptime.

ok guys when u change your proxy or ip address.does it mean that u r not traceble i mean dont FBI and others got better stuff to trace me.is this really possible to hide everything i am doing??plz help and answer

you have to use an anonymous proxy and if you live in the states, its best using one outside the states, like in Hungary or Belgium ive heard are the best, like above though you have to disable your consoles (Jave etc..) to slighten your risks, its best to bounce off a few diff. although bandwidth does make a diff. better safe than sorry

If i use the proxy settings and disable the java stuff in firefox, and i connect to somebody with prorat, they cant see my real ip? Or are those proxy settings only applying on firefox?

192.xxx.xxx.xxx is a private network IP (192 wouldn´t even work for the internet because such adresses aren´t even routed, same with 127. for example), you are online with the IP that is given by your ISP to the box, or in your case to the router.

proxies are mostly restricted to certain ports, so your firefox setting would only affect the default http ports. to use a proxy for an application it must support the port/protocol you want to use, such proxies are rare (because of the abuse potential) and are in many cases compromised servers which are abused.
