Network Neutrality Thread

Post by DNR »

The project's focus includes detection, analysis, and incident reporting of any anticompetitive, discriminatory, or other restrictive actions on the part of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or affiliated entities, such as the blocking or disruptive manipulation of applications, protocols, transmissions, or bandwidth; or other similar behaviors not specifically requested by their customers. NNS believes ISPs purposely sabatoge user connections when traffic gets too heavy - making the user try again later - when the traffic is less.

"Spoofed" (some observers prefer the term "forged") resets are those injected into an existing data stream by a suitably positioned third-party (e.g. an ISP), with the goal of terminating the connection prematurely against the wishes of the endpoints.

The NNSquad Network Measurement Agent (NNMA) monitors network activity on computer systems, looking for and flagging a variety of potential problems. NNMA also includes a special function that attempts to detect reset (RST) packets that may have been injected into a TCP connection by any entity not located at the connection endpoints.

Works for Windows 2k and newer.

Great find DNR.

There is too much trying to control from the outside by the governments and this is another step in the right direction for us to take a stand.

This is one of the reasons why I for one, like that computer systems are now available world wide for home use and that nearly every household has one. If computers were more limited in numbers then control would be a lot easier.

Thanks for the info

Google is for net neutrality

Google is on the bandwagon for Net Neutrality
http://hothardware.com/News/Google_To_D ... _Detector/

With its partners on this project, the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute and the PlanetLab Consortium. M-Lab is designed to be "an open platform that researchers can use to deploy Internet measurement tools. Google will work with researchers to help them develop relevant Internet measurement tools.

[old news]
A Note to Google Users on Net Neutrality:
The Internet as we know it is facing a serious threat. There's a debate heating up in Washington, DC on something called "net neutrality" – and it's a debate that's so important Google is asking you to get involved. We're asking you to take action to protect Internet freedom.

In the next few days, the House of Representatives is going to vote on a bill that would fundamentally alter the Internet. That bill, and one that may come up for a key vote in the Senate in the next few weeks, would give the big phone and cable companies the power to pick and choose what you will be able to see and do on the Internet.

Today the Internet is an information highway where anybody – no matter how large or small, how traditional or unconventional – has equal access. But the phone and cable monopolies, who control almost all Internet access, want the power to choose who gets access to high-speed lanes and whose content gets seen first and fastest. They want to build a two-tiered system and block the on-ramps for those who can't pay.

Creativity, innovation and a free and open marketplace are all at stake in this fight. Please call your representative (202-224-3121) and let your voice be heard.

Thanks for your time, your concern and your support.

Eric Schmidt

New News>

The U.S. House of Representatives definitively rejected the concept of Net neutrality on Thursday, dealing a bitter blow to Internet companies like Amazon.com, eBay and Google that had engaged in a last-minute lobbying campaign to support it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_neutrality

Network neutrality (equivalently net neutrality, Internet neutrality) is a principle proposed for residential broadband networks and potentially for all networks. A neutral broadband network is one that is free of restrictions on content, sites, or platforms, on the kinds of equipment that may be attached, and on the modes of communication allowed, as well as one where communication is not unreasonably degraded by other communication streams.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission last week issued its much-anticipated ruling on the legality of Internet throttling, a controversial practice employed by some Internet service providers that reduces speeds for certain applications.

The Canadian Association of Internet Providers, which represents smaller, independent ISPs, filed a complaint with the CRTC over Bell's practices earlier this year.

The commission denied CAIP's complaint, ruling that Bell treated all of its customers -- retail and wholesale -- in the same throttled manner.

Woah this is terrible news, but it's good to see that there are ways to help prevent it! Not to mention Google supporting citizens' rights where the government fails

I hope there'll be a program for Linux soon as well...

Smaller ISPs often "rent" a certain amount of bandwidth from bigger ISPs nets. I know a guy, who knows a guy, who has his own wireless internet service. His max bandwidth is 150Mbit/s. However, his total sold bandwidth is nearly 400Mbit/s. This works since not everyone surfs/downloads at the same time. Anyway, this is common (in Finland at least), so your ISP might actually be speaking the truth. Whether this is fine or not is another discussion ;)

This article shows how to use Wireshark or other sniffer to try to detect ISP throttling.
