the problem is that some (most?) politicians live in sunshine-lollipops-and-rainbows-land, they really think they can turn an islamic country into a democracy by "being nice to them"....or by a little carpet bombing...both simply can't work. as soon as the troops are gone the old system will come back.
don't get me wrong, I don't say "all muslims are terrorists" or something like that, but the Islam is not "just a religion", it is an ideology....in many ways it's similar to fascism, and therefore there can't be something like a "moderate islamic democracy".
best example: Turkey....since their new leader Erdogan is in power the country is slowly moving forwards to a islamic theocracy again. Obama lost A LOT of sympathy in europe btw by kissing the ass of the turkish president when it was about the chairmanship of the NATO....also his statements about the EU membership of turkey were totally inappropriate, that's like the EU would tell Obama that Mexico has to become part of the USA.
if anyone is interested in unfiltered news from germany ("unfiltered" in the sense of "non political correct") I recommend this site:
http://www.pi-news.org/
of course the german version of the site is a lot more often updated, but it still gives an insight about what is going on here.

I'm not sure where to start, or even if I should start... but there is so much wrong with CPT. Thompsons assessment I'd be interested to see him stick to his guns during an informed Q&A session.
I guess the biggest problem with essays like this is that they are read by people who don't have a firm grasp of either military concepts, or political maneuvering. They are filled with acronyms to make them intentionally convoluted and vague, confusing the reader to make strong points with no substantial information supporting the views. What we have here is an opinion piece... and I question it's accuracy, and it's purpose. ANA, TA-50, NCOER, S4... these are the mist that make the points... but what exactly is he talking about?
It doesn't matter, what matters, I think, is that CPT Thompson has been in the army for 8 years... and that hardly makes him the foremost authority on any of the subjects he talks on.
On the other hand, I thought the section on enablers and distracters was very funny, and no, not because to the best of my knowledge distracters is not a word... it was the story of the day at the range, and how he couldn't qualify without a PMoI... this is really great I feel anyways, and the conclusion paragraph where he says that if you want to know something, just ask a private... well that answered the question I had been wondering for the entire paper... where is this guy getting his information
I'm done... I promise, but i will laugh about this for minutes... WHOLE minutes
