I am the enemy

Post by DNR »

Well its happened again.

I get called into my bosses office, I can tell its not going to be good.

Apparently the IT department found out that I was accessing suck-o.com via SSL. They said I created an unauthorized tunnel to a prohibited website. They even signed up for Suck-o to investigate, yep - they are reading this very post! They say my pictures of only myself posted online are another violation, so they have been here..

I tried to explain that suck-o is just a computer discussion forum, with good ethics. Other staff access email, IM, cellphones, text mess, etc and I was merely accessing suck-o for the same reasons, news, and contact with friends. I explained that this "unauthorized tunnel" is common to other websites, and you only need to add an 's' in the URL to get there.

The boss explained that this was a very serious violation, even though I am a great worker - I made the IT department very nervous. They think I am a threat that must be gotten rid of.

I got misjudged again - no matter what good I do, or what potential for good I have - being a hacker or visiting a hacking website (via SSL!) only means you are the enemy of the state.

Fucking IT geniuses...

Why do THEY feel threatened?

Did you try speaking to the source of the problem, the IT staff? If they really are any form of 'Industrial Technology Specialists', they should understand better if you speak to them directly. Either way, that sucks man. SSL is really common now, just logging into your email creates an SSL connection ffs...

Well i hope the IT staff are reading this! I am glad that they have had to become a member to take a look. They have obviously glanced at the site and like most people do, put one and one together and made 3.

Well if they have had time and like most computer enthusiast when they find something interesting, as they are now members the chances are they are here reading this even if it is from there home computer and i hope they come to the same conclusion as us about learning and helping others.

We are not a maliscious site in any respect and if these people take time to come to the site, read and maybe make their own conclusions instead of jumping to them, they may find a lot of information which is of use to them. Maybe even become a regular visitor to the site, but then again it might be beneath them and they maybe a little reluctant that someone who works in the medical proffession actually knows more about computers thgan they do.

If they are reading this i hope they give you a break on this on buddy and realise that sometimes there is more than meets the eye about some people.

Hope everything is OK buddy.... Good Luck

Of course this is possible although you are probably not ready to see the outcome just yet....How is this possible? Well 1+1=3

Ill be your a character reference DNR.

I am the IT staff at my work [ a scientific research group ] have them call me. This site offers no threat to any organization. Other than the ignorant, I see no logical argument that would cause for you being terminated.

Good luck in this mess I hope for a rational - yet intelligent outcome from you're seemingly pubic IT staff.

Perhaps my wife could help in the law suit that you may have if terminated with out reasonable cause. She is a great lawyer.

Well what does it mean today..

I am going to miss suck-o.com - in a busy, hectic, crazy world of working on a hospital floor - suck-o was my only way out of the madness..

Some people think that suck-o was a world of madness - hackers - suspicious people. The people at work think they were going to 'save' someone from 'getting into trouble' by blocking this site access.

I am beyond saving, I didn't need suck-o to exist so I could exist. I began that day I met my first computer, when I became addicted to computer/network contact over people contact. I am what I am.

I am angry, this is just another ill concieved attempt by other people to control how I should think.

They win, again. I am beaten down like some shackled fool, for someone else's experiment or someone else' satisfaction.

Only because I need money, I will obey.

I will never type the words suck-o.com into a computer at work again, just to prove that I am in control.

But no matter how hard they beat me, I will never stop being who I am.

FTW

It aint about you logging into suck-o or you finding the loophole in their system. From my point of view, it's you being different. A medical stuff aint supposed to hack or find loophole in thier system. A medical stuff is supposed to save lives and read big fat biology books.

These people, actually most of the people in this world are petrified of those who are different. Everyone must follow one rule, they must live by the terms determined by others, by the majority. Live life second hand and everything well and good. Don't you dare have a different, independent position !

Hopefully they will not make the foolishness of losing you. If they do, DO SUE THEM.

damn, this really sucks.....if I can help in any way let me know, they can contact me if they want to and I'll try to explain to them the difference between whitehats and criminals, and what our ethics are.

of course you should do as they say until this is figured out (if there is a chance), don't risk your job....you can still visit good ol' suck-o when you're back home... :)

I know what you're facing DNR...
I'm preparing my self to start working in the medical field (registered nurse RN), and i know exactly how things work in hospitals, the staff, the structure, the people, the hierarchy... ALL this... the only difference is the place... you are in the US, I'm in Lebanon.
So hang in there DNR. I hope this will get resolved soon. And try to keep your job no matter what. In the light of the economic depression, this is what u need most. This is my advice to you...
Best of luck

It would be their loss to let you go, I know a lot of people. I know a lot of people who hate their job, and care little for it. You are nothing like those people, you like your job and from what I can tell you do it well.

Also, if you where accessing suck-o from a ssh tunnel. Might I ask how they found out you where accessing suck-o? From what I understand, the only possibly way would be to either log your keystrokes locally on the machine, or a MITM attack, which would probably be evasion of privacy, no? Or by tunnel, do you mean just https ?

was just https, suck-o via http was blocked by their settings, but not https....and that's why I really don't understand the problem in it, there was no malicious activity by DNR at all. I don't know HOW they technically run their web filter...but if a customer would ask me to filter a website I would simply make an entry in the hosts file and force it to resolve to localhost. effective and simple...if their filter settings can that easily be evaded (even by accident, many users prefer ssl) I wouldn't call it a filter....

I'm willing to bed dimes to doughnuts that if you had done DNS over SSL the whole thing would have been avoided. I'm pretty sure the DNS leaked the website url (or header I forget which). I'm already paranoid enough when I log on from a network I don't have control over. It's partly the reason I'm in the process of setting up and securing an SSL forwarding server at my house.
