External hard disk problems

Post by Swan »

Hello gentlemen,

I need some help please.

My external hard disk drive is giving me a spot of bother.

Image

Most of the files and folders on my external hard disk appear like that, that is, the few that I can actually see....most of the files are totally invisible.

Every so often, I get a Windows XP balloon popping:

"Delayed Write Failed...."
I ran chkdisk on my external, which informed it was dirty, and I have been unable to run a virus scan on the disk.

I am at a total loss as to what to do so advice, in terms of best steps forward, tools to use etc. would be gratefully recieved.

First of all....Dont panic!!

There are two ways you can do this. One would be to use a live CD like knoppix or puppylinux or you can use a file recovery tool. The problem here will be that if you want to recover the whole drive it has to have enough space to do so. Yo will recover the files from one drive to the other. You cant recover the files to the same drive.

You can use Get Data Back for NTFS ...its in the download section

Hope this helps :)
