I use to come across HDD all the time and I would have no clue what was on them or where they came from. I would install it in my computer as my main HDD only to find a windows log in password. This would bother me. I wouldn't always have a disk like ophcrack handy. Instead I would install the HDD as a secondary HDD. I could then go to My Computer and browse the information on it. Effectively bypassing the windows password. When I came across computers of old friends and they had forgotten their password I would take out the HDD. It wasn't real elegant but who cares I just wanted the information. This is a few years old and am not sure if it's possible with Vista but I don't see why not.

a way to retrieve data even from a password-protected HDD is to read the raw data, you can also restore the content of a HDD after a format that way (and restore deleted files).....some people even made it a hobby to buy used HDDs in second hand electronic shops because those are usually just simply formatted:

@mystic depends what the HDD was used for, if it was just a external HDD used as a storage drive, and not the OS and internet browser - then leakage is minimal or non-existant.
Windows passwords can be cracked with Cain & Able, up to XP at least. Use the LSA feature:

OPH Crack
Another XP password cracker via bootable CD is OPHcrack, effective up to XP, and I've had sporadic success on Vista systems.
Guys, Guys. Why would you work so hard on a Windows XP password ?? Just log in as the administrator and u will see that it doesn't need the old password in order to change a password.
Now I'm assuming that there is no administrator password.If that is the case the either mess with the .sam or like the rest of you guys said ophcrack or rainbow crack.
