one pc slowing down wireless internet for laptops

Post by Grombo »

4 computers are on the network all connected to the same router.

PC 1 (culprit) is running windows 7 and XP pro though the problem occurs with both. connected with a wire to the router (D-link DI-542)

PC 2 is running vista home premium and is unnaffected and connected with a wire to the router.

Laptops 1 and 2 are running Vista home premium, wirelessly connected and is slowd down severely when PC 1 is connected to the network.

how might i solve this problem or better diagnose it?

Is the connection slowing down, or the computer system ?
well, if the connection is getting slower, then increasing internet speed might be an option
if the computer its self is getting slow, then adding more RAM might solve the issue...

more nfo needed:
Laptops 1 and 2 are running Vista home premium, wirelessly connected and is slowd down severely when PC 1 is connected to the network.
Where do the two laptops connect wireless? Direct to the router via wifi AP, or to PC#1 via wifi card and its ICS?

What happens when you turn OFF PC#1 - do the laptops have access to the internet?

Run a packetsniffer and see what is on your LAN when things start slowing down

my apologies, in hindsight it wasnt a terribly detailed post.

all the computers are connected directly to the router. and this is probably irrelevant but so is one printer.

When PC1 is off or unplugged from the network:
-Laptops 1 and 2 are completely functional and as fast as they should be with both online and offline activities
-PC2 is completely functional and as fast as it should be with both online and offline activities

when PC1 is on and plugged in to the network:
-Laptops 1 and 2 run fine as far as offline performance goes but online activities slow to a crawl
-PC's 1 and 2 are completely functional and as fast as they should be with both online and offline activities

it may be worth mentioning the laptop models

-Compaq Presario c700 (laptop 1 for this instant)
-Dell inspiron 1720 (laptop 2)
