would you... ?
All mortals think that a hacker is someone who sits in a basement and steal credit card numbers and hack email accounts and sites, they do not need to know the truth.
The only ones that know what I do on my computer, are those that I consider equals, and to them I am not a hacker, I am a colleague.

I wouldn't announce anything to non-close people unless they ask, hacker questions included...
Only once someone has asked me "are you a hacker?" (we did a project about net ethics) and I answered so vaguely that he knew less after I was done
If you're confronted with the question, you should ask them back "what is a hacker to you" and then tell them what kind of hacker you're trying to be. Or if it's a really stuck-up person, just say no to avoid all the hassle
