Password Protected

Post by f4Gg0t_43 »

I have an external HDD I'm wondering is it possible to have it password protected somehow? The entire drive is NTFS format.

Yes it is possible. There are free programs that can do it for you or you could pay for one if you really wanted to. A quick search online could give you more details.

Truecrypt would be good...I mean, a password protection is pretty pointless as long as the content can still be read easily.... :-k

I'm not trying to hide my files from the government or something, just from other people who live with me, who are certainly not computer experts.

ok, but you can still reach your goal (password protect the drive) with Truecrypt...

Yeah I've used TrueCrypt before it's pretty nice, it just kind of seems like it's too much, but it doesn't really matter, I made a 5gb TrueCrypt container. I mounted it, but the next morning I had the BSOD (which I haven't gotten in a LONG time) so I don't know if the 2 are related or not. If I get another one I'll write down what it says.

yeah, Truecrypt of course has a lot of options, but for your needs a simple encryption and password protection is enough, no need to use advanced options like keyfiles for example. I am using it since about 2 years for my storage, never had problems so far... :-k

I've been using it on a terabyte for a little over a year problem free... maybe it was unrelated, or an isolated incident

No BSOD since, so it was probably unrelated.
